MMR Vaccination

The MMR vaccine protects children against three serious infections: measles, mumps and rubella.
These illnesses are highly contagious and can lead to serious complications, especially in young children.

Vaccinating your child with MMR is a safe and effective way to protect them, protect others, and prevent outbreaks in the community.

What is the MMR vaccine?

The MMR vaccine is a combined vaccine that protects against:

Measles

A highly infectious virus that can cause:

  • High fever
  • Rash
  • Chest infections
  • Seizures
  • Brain inflammation (encephalitis)

Mumps

A viral infection that can lead to:

  • Swollen glands in the neck
  • Fever and headache
  • Hearing loss (in rare cases)
  • Fertility problems later in life (rare, but serious)

Rubella (German measles)

Usually mild in children, but very dangerous in pregnancy, as it can cause:

  • Miscarriage
  • Stillbirth
  • Serious birth defects

 

When is the MMR vaccine given?

Children are offered two doses of the MMR vaccine as part of the NHS routine childhood immunisation programme:

  • 1st dose: at 12 months
  • 2nd dose: at 3 years 4 months

Two doses are needed to give the best possible protection.

If your child has missed one or both doses, it’s never too late to catch up.

 

Why is MMR so important?

MMR vaccination:

  • Protects your child from serious illness
  • Prevents the spread of infection to babies, pregnant women, and vulnerable people
  • Helps stop outbreaks in schools and communities

Measles, in particular, spreads very easily — when vaccination rates drop, outbreaks happen. High uptake keeps everyone safer.

 

Is the MMR vaccine safe?

Yes. The MMR vaccine has been used for decades and has been given to millions of children worldwide.

  • It does not cause autism
  • It does not overload the immune system
  • It is closely monitored for safety

Most children have no side effects. Some may have:

  • A mild fever
  • A small rash
  • Temporary swelling at the injection site

These usually settle on their own.
